Committee Governance

What do you need to do?

To manage your village hall effectively, your committee needs to:

  • understand their role
  • deliver organisational purpose
  • work effectively as individuals and a team
  • exercise control
  • behave with integrity
  • be open and accountable

Sources of guidance

We aim to support and enable good governance, keep your committee informed about topical governance matters and provide you with information on useful and relevant resources.

The Charity Commission gives lots of guidance to help you set up a non profit organisation and also to understand good practice and the extent of your powers and duties when managing charity resources (see Q1 of our Top Ten Hall Management Questions).

You will also need to manage Health and Safety to protect your members, any employees and members of the public who may be affected by your activities (see Q3, Top Ten Hall Management Questions).

You can find lots of help and advice on governance via these websites:

Making a difference

Would you like to nominate a trustee or management committee member for outstanding service to the community?  Honours committees are looking for someone who has made a difference in their field of work or community – could that be someone you know, or even you?
