Split into two parts, this guide starts with a clear introduction to the English planning system. It breaks down planning jargon and key phrases to help the public better understand how the planning system works and describes how planning applications are assessed.

Part 2 of the guide sets out eight key steps for meaningfully and positively engaging with planning applications in your area. From understanding the context to drafting responses and gathering support, this section empowers the public to support good development and to take a positive, active part in shaping what gets built in their area.

The planning system exists to ensure that places are developed or protected in the public interest, providing checks and balances on the private sector as well as ensuring that necessary infrastructure and public services are delivered where they are needed. The guide, produced by CPRE and NALC, presents technical information simply to help make understanding the planning system in England accessible to everyone.
