As part of WRCC’s ongoing Volunteers Week celebration, our Community Transport Volunteer Manager, Jane Griffiths has written a blog to share our appreciation for the Back & 4th Volunteers and a call to ‘Come and join the Team’

On Monday – the first day of Volunteers’ Week –  we invited our amazing volunteer minibus drivers over for a breakfast buttie & a cuppa as our way of saying just a small thank you for the large amount of time & effort they put in. Without the volunteer drivers many charities and community groups simply wouldn’t be able to afford to get out & about.

The community groups often get in touch after trips to compliment the service provided. A choir, who are Bilton-based, and haven’t used us before said “It all worked like clockwork with two very pleasant, professional drivers. I have no doubt we will be using you again in the future”. A local Scouts group organiser said “Thank you for your services once again – the group had a wonderful, stress-free day out”. They added that they are “so relieved we have you guys!”.

The volunteers try to persuade us that they get more out of volunteering than they put in… one such moment happened earlier in the year. The volunteer said “I met lovely Helen and Libby at Lillington and picked up 11 passengers. They were all Ukrainian refugees of school age and extremely well behaved. It’s such a privilege to be able to help these people and so rewarding to see the difference it makes taking them on a trip out”.

So why not join this brilliant group of volunteers to start helping community groups in your area? During our breakfast buttie get together, one of the volunteers said that it was because the role was so flexible that it operated so well as part of his retirement. You’ll need a D1 driving licence entitlement – and then we’ll give you full in-house MiDAS training and carry out a DBS check.
